Now that we’re on day 3 of antibiotics, it’s time to turn to yeast prevention.  We’ve never been prone to yeast infections, so I’m not terribly concerned, but I’m going to take the easiest precautions anyway:

  • ditch the baby wipes, replacing them with plain-water butt baths and cotton balls soaked in a mild vinegar solution;
  • cloth diapers without covers while at home
  • disposables when out, because
    • (a) throwing used diapers away will reduce contamination of the contents of my diaper bag, and
    • (b) water activity next to baby’s skin will be lower;
  • buying a few more nursing bras so I can wear them only once and wash them in hot;
  • yogurt, yogurt, yogurt.

She’s not herself yet but the medicine is staying down.  Hurray!  One week to go.

  1. I keep a bunch of cheap wash cloths to use as wipes. I get them wet with just plain warm tap water, and I find they’re more effective at cleaning off explosive poops. There’s more surface area to use, and it is a bit more scrubbier without being irritating. I toss them in the pail and wash with the diapers.
    I’m so glad MJ is starting to get better.

  2. Are you giving her a water chaser after the antibiotics? My oldest and I had an awful summer with thrush after he had a course of antibiotics. He would ask to nurse right after a dose because he hated the medicine (sticky antibiotics on my breast, killing off some of the normal flora), and I never thought to rinse out his mouth (sticky antibiotics in his mouth, ditto).

  3. CJ,no, I didn’t think of that. We have been waiting a half hour or so after the abx dose to nurse, only because it seems to help keep her from vomiting it up. I will see if she’ll take water or yogurt in between.
