Library skills links.

Part 5 in a series about developing library-skills curriculum for second graders. 

I collect some links with more information:

• How to use the Library of Congress catalog system.

That should be enough to get me started.  Here are the books I checked out today:

• The Kid’s Guide to Research by Deborah Heiligman.  Very detailed — I will certainly use this.  Maybe a 6th-grade reading level.
• The Inside Outside Book of Libraries by Roxie Munro and Julie Cummins.  Gorgeous book about a variety of libraries big, small, and specialized.  Points out that your home collection is also a library.  Looks like a great read-aloud.
• At the Library by Carol Greene.  (no link) Not really helpful for my curriculum, but it looks like something to read to a littler child.
• Libraries by Lucia Raatma.  My son should be able to read this on on his own.  Includes some history of libraries, of paper, of books.  Lots of photo illustrations.  The back cover says there are books in the same series about the Dewey Decimal System and about the Library of Congress.
• A Day in the Life of a Librarian by Liza N. Burby.   I chose this one from the other books about librarians because the featured librarian — excuse me, information specialist (IN-fer-MAY-shun SPESH-uh-list) — is male.  I have boys.   I think the reading level is 3rd or 4th grade.  It’s pretty good and explains clearly how librarians can help people in the library.
